Designed by the President himself, Thomas Jefferson's Poplar Retreat was created as a secluded villa retreat but is now regarded as a prized piece of architecture. The octagonal home's design features a beautiful interweaving of Classical, Renaissance palladian, 18th century French, British and Colonial elements. Restored after decades of disrepair, now visitors can take a guided tour through this incredible architectural marvel and learn about its elements as well as the life and genius of Jefferson himself. Located in rural Virginia about 9 miles southeast of Lynchburg, the historic residence is a bit of a drive to reach but the experience more than worth the time.
